A car towed in Spokane: find it, arrange release or seek a hearing

Find the operator and the authority behind the tow

The first task is to locate the car and establish why it was taken. Spokane Police's policy manual linked from its accountability page, dated 21 August 2026, describes a rotation of licensed towing firms. It does not name one storage yard that holds every police-towed car. Use the notice and the authority involved to identify the operator holding yours.

A private-property tow, police impound and junk-vehicle abatement can involve different authority and review procedures. Read the issuer's name instead of assuming the same court or office handles every case. Keep the notice and its envelope: dates and the identity of the issuer may matter later.

Get the release requirements and a current amount

Ask the actual operator for an itemized towing and storage amount, the pickup location, the hours when redemption is possible and the documents needed to establish your right to the vehicle. Ask separately whether the authority has placed a hold. A payment to a tow operator should not be assumed to remove a police or court restriction.

Washington's impound statute describes who may redeem and the payment or security rules for release. Those rules depend on the circumstances; this page does not promise that any person carrying the keys can collect the car. Tell the operator if the vehicle cannot be driven and confirm an appropriate way to transport it after release.

Request the amount for the day you expect to collect. Storage continues while the vehicle remains held; a total written on yesterday's notice may not be today's amount. The city court's page explicitly says storage charges continue while a hearing is pending. Compare actual written figures, not an invented Spokane daily rate.

The hearing sources count from different events

Source conflict checked 10 September 2026: the version of RCW 46.55.120 in force before 1 July 2027 says a hearing request must be received within ten days from the date notice of the hearing opportunity was provided, and more than five days before auction. Its wording includes “within ten days of the date the opportunity was provided for in (a) of this subsection”.

Spokane Municipal Court's procedure page instead describes ten calendar days from redeeming or attempting to redeem the vehicle. Its wording is “within 10 calendar days of redeeming your vehicle or attempting to redeem your vehicle”. These are different triggering events. The statute is the rule; the city page describes its local procedure. They should not be blended into one guessed deadline.

Request the hearing the same day you get the notice and confirm the deadline with the court named on it. That is our practical instruction for handling the discrepancy, not a replacement deadline. Keep proof of what the court received. There is deliberately no hearing-date calculator here.

The legislature page also displays text effective 1 July 2027. It is not the rule in force for this September 2026 guide, and must not be applied early. The notice should identify the court for your impound; do not assume every tow inside the county goes to Spokane Municipal Court.

A hearing request does not pause storage

The Municipal Court page lists a $73 filing fee and explains how to submit its impound hearing paperwork. It also explains that the owner can redeem the vehicle while contesting the impound. Read the court's actual instructions for the notice in front of you; the fee shown here was checked on 10 September 2026 and is not a tow or storage charge.

Do not assume filing makes the car available to the referral buyer, stops storage or removes an auction deadline. If cost is the immediate problem, ask the holder for the exact balance and the court about the procedure that applies. This site cannot release a vehicle, stay an auction, waive a fee or determine the result of a hearing.

Keep the notice, itemized invoice, photographs you lawfully have, release discussions and the receipt for the hearing request together. They describe different parts of the event; a phone conversation without a written record can be harder to reconstruct.

Can selling the car solve the storage problem?

A sale still requires authority to transfer the vehicle and an agreed way for the collector to obtain access. Get the operator's release requirements before booking collection. The buyer's advertised free pickup is not a published promise to pay an old impound invoice, settle a lien or override a hold.

Compare an actual offer with the actual release and transport costs you would have to pay. If costs exceed the proposed amount, that arithmetic does not tell you that abandoning the car erases the debt. Ask the operator or the issuing authority about the options and responsibilities shown on the notice.

If the car was sold before the event, follow the notice-response guide and locate the sale and seller-report confirmation.
